Hello 8th Grade Families,

Today we started off with a worksheet on adjective and adverbs. The 8th graders worked amongst themselves and did a GREAT job! We checked the papers and discussed why something was an adjective rather than an adverb and vice versa.

Afterwards I put up the lyrics to The Beatles' Blackbird and I played the song for the 8th grade. I asked them to listen carefully and to look at the words so we could find common themes/topics between the song and our novel, Night. They did a good job identifying the word night and deciding that it could relate to death and dark times. There were many other parts of the song/lyrics that had depth and meaning that we discussed in detail. I explained that the song was written in relation to the fight to end segregation and we discussed how this could apply to Night. We discussed that in both situations people were being judged based on their appearance and background.

We were able to read a small amount from our novel, but with that small amount came great discussion.

Best,
Mrs. Baier
