When do you not use the definite and indefinite articles?

 

Indefinite Omission:

1) The indefinite article is omitted before an unmodified predicate noun denoting nationality, occupation, or rank.

Es Americano

He is an American

*Es un buen Americano

He is a good American

Es Medico

He is a doctor

*Es un medico famoso

He is a famous doctor

Es general

He is a general

Es un gran general

He is a great general

 

Definite Article:

1) Before a noun in apposition.

Ex)       La Habana, capital de Cuba, es una ciudad hermosa.

            Havana, the capital of Cuba, is a beautiful city.

 

Note: The article is used if the noun is followed by an adjective in the superlative degree.

Ex)       La Habana, la ciudad más hermosa de Cuba, es la capital.

            Havana, the most beautiful city of Cuba, is the capital.

 

2) Before a numeral used with the name of a ruler.
